Our goals are set in a full department meeting in the fourth quarter of each year. They are generally annualised and specific members of the team are assigned components of each one. These people then report back to department meetings throughout the year on progress towards these goals.

Department of English Goals for 2009

We’re well under way in our work towards achieving the year’s goals. “Did we set wise ones? Could we do better?”

  1. To develop a continuum for Reading and Writing that enables students to monitor their own progress and focus on their next steps.

  2. This is a document that students will be able to carry from year 7-10 that will help them to map their own progress in these key curriculum areas

  3. Guardians: Dawn and Kris

  1. In addressing all aspects of the New Curriculum document, a major focus will be upon the Key Competencies and Effective Pedagogy

  2. The New Curriculum document will be used in ways  that are locally developed for all future learning and assessment tasks, ensuring the inclusion of relevant Key Competencies in all new learning sequences.

  3. Guardians: Jane, Leslie and Chris

  1. To organise and run an Arts Festival involving all students, staff and outside visitors from the community - including specialist teachers, performers, parents and other interested people.

  2. This event is to occur in the second last week of Term 2 and might involve students from English, Drama, Music, Art, Technology, food.. The intention is to celebrate the Arts and Language: Written, Oral and Visual

  1. To continue to support the development of the Lead Teachers roles and their output

  2. The teachers will continue their work in developing the generic marking rubrics, stay ahead of trends and opportunities relating to learning and assessment and ensure moderation is happening across the board.

  3. Time is identified as a significant resource needed for these teachers to be effective in their role

  4. The measurement of this goal will be the extent to which the portfolios, rubrics and resources have been developed.

  5. Guardians: Chris

  1. Literacy should remain a focus of the Years 7-10 programme. The Year 8 Literacy programme from 2008 will be modified and implemented at Year 7.

  2. A full summary of the 2008 literacy initiatives may be necessary before we can clearly identify the scope of the department’s work in literacy in 2009. This will occur forthwith.

  3. Guardians: Jane, Katie and Nicola

  1. Gifted and Talented: Implement a departmental policy
